AbstractEstimates of the incidence of abuse of children with disabilities range from 2 to 10 times the rate of children without disabilities All forms of abuse, including multiple types of abuse with the same child, multiple perpetrators of abuse, and multiple victims within a grouping of children, exist within the population of children with disabilities. The majority of the perpetrators are known to the abuse victim. Disabilities caused by child abuse are estimated to represent 25 percent of all developmental disabilities. Signs of abuse include, among others, frequent unexplained injuries, aggressive or withdrawn behavior, and wariness concerning physical contact. Family members should be informed that their children are at risk. Parents should talk to their children about abuse awareness and should be empowered to take firm action to apprehend the perpetrator. Many children can benefit from self defense programs with individually tailored defense and response techniques. The key to successful intervention and amelioration of maltreatment is recognition by the fields of child abuse protection and disabilities of their common interest. Professionals need to develop working relationships that allow for cross referral, cross training, consultation across agency lines, and increased accessibility for the disabled community.
