| Abstract | This practicum was designed to address the problem of low quantity and poor quality of writing in two lower level English classes (50 students). The objectives were to increase motivation for writing, thereby improving overall writing production by the students. A writing workshop was designed to improve the motivation of the students by empowering them to have a choice in what they write about and how they write it. Students were submerged and surrounded by writing for three class periods out of five in a school week. Individual conferences were used as a means of evaluation. Grading was done by charting each student's daily progress and having the students tell quickly where they were in their writing. The focus of the writing was on content, and student writing was kept in folders. Students chose their own topics and were allowed to work cooperatively. Motivation was increased and, as a result, students' writing improved in both quantity and quality. Students' attitudes toward writing also improved, and the number of disruptions per class periods decreased. Students became involved in the writing process and developed skills enabling them to both work independently and share ideas with peers. The data from this practicum clearly showed that when students become motivated their writing improves dramatically. Students will write more and of a better quality if they have a choice in the subject matter. (Appendixes include the diagnostic essay assignment and writing survey; 25 references are attached.)
