AbstractThis paper discusses the perceptions of student teachers, cooperating teachers and pupils in two social studies lessons. Videotapes of two student teachers in action in the classroom were used for stimulated recall interviews in which they discussed their perceptions and feelings about their own performance, their cooperating teacher's reactions, and the students' responses. It is posited that the classroom in which any student teacher is placed provides a social system that has already been shaped by the cooperating teacher and the students. It appeared that the social system of the classroom was an important factor in the thinking of the two student teachers, and their perceptions of their relationship to the cooperating teacher were closely tied to their perceptions of their relationship with the students.
