Abstract | A bilingual pamphlet containing practical law-related information for recent Russian Jewish immigrants to New York City, this document addresses the court system. Following a brief description of the Newcomer series, 9 questions are listed, each followed by an answer. Questions asked include the difference between criminal and civil law; how the court system operates, including the types of courts belonging to the system; the rights of a citizen upon arrest; what a parent can do if a child is arrested; a description of the juvenile court system; legal and illegal searches; the "grand jury", plea bargaining, due process of law, and what to do if called as a witness. A final page, titled "Where to Go for Help," lists four legal aid service agencies. (CBC) |
