| Abstract | This literature review attempted to (1) examine whether hearing impaired children are at high risk for child abuse and neglect, (2) identify components of effective child abuse and neglect prevention programs and (3) identify currently existing programs for the prevention of child abuse and neglect with hearing impaired children. The review found consistent reports that children with pre-existent handicapping conditions are at higher risk for child abuse and neglect, but no information was found regarding which groups of handicapped children are more at risk. It is suggested that the communication deficits of the hearing impaired child may well increase the child's vulnerability to abuse and neglect. Among effective program components identified in the literature are parent education, parent support groups, and periodic respite care. A nationwide survey of parent programs for families with hearing impaired children found no programs which specifically identified prevention of child abuse or neglect as a primary goal. However, the purpose of parent programs is compatible with the objectives of child abuse and neglect prevention programs, since they typically provide information and referral, parent peer support groups, and individual counseling.
