Abstract | Acid pollution is a major international problem, but the debate it has elicited has often clouded the distinction between myth and facts. This publication attempts to concerning the acid pollution situation. This publication attempts to identify available facts. It is the first global review of the problem of acid pollution and the first to comprehensively examine the potential for acid pollution in developing countries. Specific topic areas addressed include: (l) the chemistry and formation of acid pollution; (2) acid damage (identifying the impacts on forests, plants and crops, lakes, rivers and fish, human health, and building corrosion); (3) acid pollution reduction and control (reviewing management strategies); (4) international implications (evaluating the political considerations and control agreements); and (5) individual country profiles (outlining the position and conditions of acid pollution in 39 key countries).
