Abstract | An instructional framework which provides opportunities for students to synthesize knowledge and recognize general approaches to problem representation and solution is advocated and discussed in this paper. The need for a combination of an interdisciplinary approach with the new technologies of the information age is emphasized. Major ideas addressed include: (1) the need for knowledge integration; (2) the nature of complex systems, using the cardiovascular system as an example; (3) hierarchial representation of complex systems; (4) problem solving in complex systems, using the cardiovascular system as an example; (5) the role of the computer in teaching about complexity; (6) a way to modify the existing curriculum and to teach integrative thinking by using new computer-based simulations; and (7) a new professional activity, knowledge interface design, which will facilitate the transformation of the present curriculum.
