AbstractScience education specialists from Asian and Pacific countries convened to explore issues related to the evaluation of pupil science learning. This document contains a synthesis of the discussions and findings of the meeting. Summaries of the study group's deliberations are provided in four sections. Chapter 1 describes the participating countries' experiences concerning the nature of and problems in pupil evaluation. Common themes and issues are identified and discussed concerning instruction, the educational environment, and student attitudes. An analysis of current objectives and emphases of science education occurs in chapter 2. This chapter contains ideas on the purposes, prerequisites, influences, and constraints connected with pupil evaluation. Chapter 3 offers some possible solutions to the identified problems. Recommendations are itemized for societal, teacher, instrumentation, pupil, time, local, curriculum, facility, and language factors. Specific strategies and methodologies for evaluating pupil activities are presented in chapter 4. Descriptive tables provide examples of evaluation possibilities. The participants' names and addresses are included in an appendix. (ML)
