AbstractA study examined the role of the administrator and the program planner in program development in adult education. To obtain this information, the researcher administered written questionnaires and conducted follow-up interviews with 10 administrators and 10 program planners working in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, metropolitan area. The questionnaire was designed to determine whether each of 80 tasks associated with program development was the responsibility of the program administrator, the program planner, or both of them. During the interviews, researchers sought information pertaining to the sharing of tasks between the two groups of professionals. Four tasks were identified by 50 percent of the respondents as being shared by administrators and program planners. These were orienting new staff; educating the public, potential clients, and staff about programs; reviewing competitive programs; and handling complaints. Although few team members acknowledged any problems when working on the same task, some did identify lack of communication and finances as problem areas. Recommendations included calls for both groups to increase their efforts to clarify their professional roles and to develop further their interpersonal skills. (MN)
