Abstract | This paper (1) examines some of the problems confronting persons doing research on adult educators; (2) presents a conceptual framework for clarifying researchable relationships among several selected major variables; and (3) suggests directions and approaches that appear promisinq to the authors. The first of three parts contains a brief explanation of several characteristics of the field that limit adult education research. It is a description of several field characteristics that have inhibited research in adult education in the past. The second part contains a discussion of variables that appear to be essential to further research. These variables are then used to construct a map or conceptual framework that provides for the construction of a research agenda. The third part of the paper discusses several strategies and methodological approaches appropriate for studying relationships that appear to be most important for theory buildinq. A variety of research approaches is recommended and a reference list is included. (KC) |
