Abstract | The booklet provides guidelines, concrete curriculum plans, and rough ideas on urban adventure programs for suburban high school students. Following an overview that explains a three-phase organizing theory (exploration, focusing, action) for urban programs, there are descriptions of: a student-organized and conducted architectural tour of New York City; a program based on an urban scavenger hunt for ninth graders in traditional schools in the Denver area; an intensive 5-day experience in Denver for an alternative high school; 19 specific urban awareness activities that involve observing, questioning, and synthesizing; ideas for written projects based on urban conditions in New York; how and where to find and interview resource people in a city; and a 3-day urban experience for teachers run by the Colorado Outward Bound School. A list of 15 "process skills" necessary for successful urban adventures is included, as well as a discussion of teacher liability during city experiences. (SB) |
