Abstract | This exploratory field study involved ten weeks of intensive observations and interviews with four inner city teachers. The initial focus was on exploring heuristic and practical advantages that could ensue when teachers have professional "confidants" (other professionals with whom to frankly discuss personal experiences and concerns of teaching). Data analysis consisted of a thorough inductive analysis of field notes, interview transcripts, and the investigator's personal journal. The results included tentative conclusions on the feasibility and possible implications of a confidant approach to teacher development, including unexpected findings relative to the practice of staff development and the preparation of staff development personnel.
