Abstract	Designed to expose high school students to the complexities of the bureaucratic structure of the Federal Government (especially that of the structure and organization of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and its relationship to tribal governments), this curriculum bulletin provides a guide for exploring the Federal Government's responsibilities to Indian communities established through the years by statute. Because Indian people are subject to their own tribal regulations as well as to State and Federal laws, it also provides for the study of tribal government structures. The course seeks to help students to learn the origin of the history of Indian policy and understand the social, economic, political, and environmental factors that have influenced it in the past and that are at work today. Particular attention is directed toward the Indian Self-Determination and Educational Assistance Act which places great emphasis on tribal government. Each of the 19 units within the course lists the major concepts to be studied along with an outline for the unit. Materials would include historical records, maps, charts, graphs, copies of the U.S. Constitution, tribal constitutions, the Indian Civil Rights Act of 1968, congressional records, and pamphlets from the Office of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs. Learning activities include lecture-discussions, resource speakers, field trips, special projects, and role play. (Author/DS)
