AbstractThe document presents a course designed to help underprepared community college students improve their reading skills and a discussion of the adult education learning principles upon which it is based. An introductory section reviews the literature pertaining to principles of adult education, and the differences between adult learning needs and the needs of children and adolescents, in terms of self-concept, experience, readiness to learn, and orientation to learning. Background information, rationale, course development procedures, and a research design for course evaluation are discussed. The semester-long course, designed for those adult students with a reading level below the eleventh grade, enables the teacher to work with a wide variety of student skills. Course objectives and detailed performance objectives are outlined for literal comprehension, interpretation, vocabulary development, study/reference skills, and application of skills. Adult teaching strategies, instructional resources, and the course outline, which includes the scope and sequencing of the skills to be mastered, are also presented. (LH)
