Abstract | The document presents reports of Summer Resource Personnel Workshops held at the University of Minnesota, Morris, Minnesota, in 1972, 1973, 1974, and 1975 to improve precollegiate social science education. Objectives of the workshops were to train educators as resource personnel; implement and disseminate projects in anthropology, geography, and sociology at the high school level; and develop patterns of cooperation among schools, colleges of education, and the liberal arts. Each report includes a description of workshop organization, a report on dissemination and implementation activities, feedback from workshop participants, and recommendations for social studies curriculum development based upon participant reactions. The overview sections explain how participants were selected and organized into teams, list objectives, and summarize conclusions from feedback questionnaires. The sections on dissemination and implementation list activities carried out by participants following the workshop, including teacher workshops, student teacher seminars, and presentation of project materials to professional organizations. The sections summarizing participant feedback present generally positive reactions to the workshop and to professional growth as a result of workshop participation, and suggest areas for future development, including increased involvement by the federal government in social studies education and development of more student centered curriculum. Participant feedback in tabulated form is also presented in each report and information on participant use of workshop materials is included in the 1974 and 1975 reports. (Author/DB) |
