Abstract | A representative group of 4,000 California high school seniors was randomly assigned one of five essay topics. Each essay was given two independent ratings based on criteria specified for each topic by an advisory group of English teachers. On the basis of the scores, a representative subset of 750 essays was randomly selected from the top quarter, middle half, and bottom quarter of papers for each of the five topics. These were appraised for frequently occurring strengths and weaknesses on specific competencies (e.g., vocabulary, capitalization, spelling) and content (e.g., appropriate response to directions; tone, style; reasoning, support, development). Results indicated that the vast majority of seniors were able to communicate in writing; that students who wrote well tended to do well on all dimensions of writing, including content and mechanics; that the average scores for girls were slightly higher than for boys; and that school averages obtained by students on the state objective assessment tests correlated substantially (.79) with the averages of essay scores. Copies of scoring instructions and illustrative student essays are included in the report. (AA) |
