AbstractRecognizing the growth of educational support services for family day care throughout New York State and other parts of the country, a policy oriented evaluation was performed to analyze the feasibility of such a service being adopted and continued as an educational delivery system by communities throughout the nation. The evaluation used a naturalistic research methodology including (1) a literature review, (2) analysis of records, documents, and demographic data, (3) onsite observation, (4) elite and specialized interviewing according to role perspective, and (5) a mailed questionnaire. Data were collected from 23 sites where efforts had been made to undertake the establishment of a family day care educational support system, and from an indepth case study of a particular family day care pilot project. The efforts of this pilot project to disseminate its model were included in the evaluation. Criteria that were used by the evaluation team for judging the feasibility for adoption and continuation of program efforts were credibility, observability, relevance, relative advantage, ease in understanding and usability, compatibility and try-ability. The evaluation results are intended to be useful to potential funders in decisions related to ongoing financial support for such efforts and to present and prospective program directors in their efforts to present the needs and potential benefits of a day care educational support system.
