| Abstract | This book is designed to help the reader attain a real understanding of the mechanics of tennis. It provides an important link between tennis theory and practice. The book covers activities that develop skills in beginners through advanced tennis and tactics applicable for seasoned players. The author draws upon scientific principles of biomechanics to relate laws of physics and human anatomy to the study of tennis. The chapters in the book include: biomechanical principles involved in tennis; coaching methodology; class control and discipline; activities for beginners; advanced physical fitness training for tennis; single tactics; double tactics; mixed double tactics; and advice from tennis champions. A large number of routines are presented to facilitate group teaching. These routines follow a logical pattern in an ever-increasing degree of difficulty. For the coach in charge of developing a tennis team, the author provides not only a practical routine but also a method of self-improvement. Tactical hints presented for team situations prove equally valuable on a one-to-one basis. Photographs and illustrations help to demonstrate proper positions, moves, and techniques. (SK) |
