| Abstract | This volume attempts to view the literature of the United States as part of the literature of the English-speaking people and as a part of world literature. Biographies of writers, summaries of plots, and footnoting have been minimized to devote the maximum attention to an examination of the literature itself. The book consists of studies of the various kinds of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry written during each of the following four historical time periods: from the first colonization to the young republic, 1720-1812; from the young republic to the Civil War, 1812-1865; from the Civil War to World War I, 1865-1914; and contemporary America, 1914 to the present. A bibliography and an index are included. (JM) |
