| Abstract | Three philosophic positions underlying the process of education -- to know, to do, and to be -- are considered as complementary rather than conflicting goals in this discussion of what the process of learning and teaching should ideally involve. "The Parable of a Literate Farmer" is the vehicle for describing the learning and teaching process. The farmer is frustrated in his attempts to persuade his children to continue his life's work, the study and accumulation of a pile of manure. Trying to instill in his children his knowledge of the pile he ignores the processes of "doing" and "being." In a second ending to the parable the farmer reflects on his own learning process and sees that his is not the master of a body of knowledge so much as a creator of his own understanding. This time the farmer is able to teach his children by valuing and stimulating their unique styles of understanding. He, in turn, becomes for his children the model of a competent man, as they see him take in and benefit from his experiences with them. The parable now represents an effective process for self-actuating involvement in the act of learning. (JH) |
