Abstract | In this study, the author attempts to identify feasible new appointment schedules for a large tenure and nontenure faculty group in which quota restrictions have been applied to the total number of faculty appointments. It is assumed that the system is in equilibrium in the sense that the flow rate of new appointments is equal to the sum of resignation, retirement, and death rates. Several models were formulated and discussed at the University of California in the fall of 1967; it soon became apparent that there was a need for a simple, informal explanation and discussion of the more complicated statistical models used to predict faculty movements, promotions, resignations, and changes in rank and age distributions with the passage of time for the planning purposes of institutional administrators. This report is intended to be such a device for explaining the underlying patterns of tenure and nontenure personnel movements, and as a model for estimating the magnitude of these flows and the qualitative effect of new appointments on promotions policies.
