Abstract | This is a report on a one-year demonstration of the Appalachia Educational Laboratory's Home-Oriented Preschool Education Program conducted in Kanawha County, West Virginia, by the Kanawha County Board of Education. It involves 150 children, ages 3, 4, and 5 from a rural isolated section who watched 170 daily television lessons broadcast over a commercial station, participated in a weekly group session of 10 to 15 children in a mobile classroom facility under the direction of a certified teacher, and received a weekly home visit from a paraprofessional teacher. Evaluation included overall effectiveness to the program, relation of student achievement to areas of program emphasis and an assessment of parents' attitude toward the program. Pre- and post-testing revealed that, although the demonstration did not produce significant changes in IQ in comparison with the control group, such changes were obtained in the areas of pre-reading skills and in the overall achievement of the program's objectives. Parental attitude toward the program was highly positive. The successful operation of this demonstration of the HOPE Program by the Kanawha County Board of Education indicates that comparable results may be obtained when the program is replicated by school districts.
