AbstractContained in this report are the thoroughly documented findings of a survey for a basic curriculum to equip middle and upper level personnel for managing the growth and change confronting their libraries. The study contains the data and fully describes the survey method that is the basis for the proposed curriculum. Its aim is to upgrade the profession of librarianship. Data for the study was obtained through questionnaires sent to 365 federal librarians with graduate degrees in library science, and through interviews with 20 top level library administrators. Questionnaires explored personal, educational, and professional backgrounds. Information was also supplied on job activities, deficiencies in existing training, and the interests in further study. Administrators were asked to comment on the relative value of suggested courses and on what they would expect librarians to gain by participation in a post-MLS program. This study makes recommendations including that of a one-year post-master's program, interdisciplinary in approach and related to on-the-job-needs. It lists high-priority courses and makes recommendations for further research into such areas as technological aids to bringing the campus to the library, motivational factors in continuing education, and development of workshops.
