Abstract | This third volume in a series on foreign language education reviews the experience, writing, and research in the United States during 1970. The central theme, pluralism in foreign language education, is exemplified in each chapter. This theme suggests that the profession is no longer consciously oriented to a single approach to the learning of a foreign language and its culture. It is hoped that the chapters in this volume will contribute to a broader understanding of the different needs and requirements of foreign language instruction that are as pluralistic as the communities, schools, and learning curriculums within them. Chapters include material on: (1) the meaning of "pluralism" in foreign language education, (2) cultural pluralism, (3) approaches to bilingualism, (4) foreign language interdisciplinary programs and activities, (5) language learning processes and instructional strategies, (6) individualized instruction, (7) inservice programs, (8) uncommonly taught languages, and (9) program evaluation and accountability.
