| Abstract | The 3 essays on migrants in this study draw upon a survey of 181 migrants from 12 crews and of the crew leaders and growers associated with these crews, a small survey of an agricultural community, field notes of 16 undergraduate students who lived and worked in 14 migrant labor camps for 5 to 10 weeks, and interviews by 8 additional students with farmers, social workers, administrators in government and church agencies, and teachers related to the migrant labor system. The essays concentrate on migrants' adaptation to an environment shaped by such factors as physical and social exclusion from the wider society (most migrants studied were black), an uprooted pattern of life marked by seasonal geographic mobility, the conditions of steep labor, the dependence and powerlessness imposed by living in an employer-owned camp, the limited physical setting of a labor camp, and the effects of the temporary character of a labor crew. Recommendations are offered, "more to indicate obvious points of vulnerability in the migrant labor system than to provide quick or sufficient solutions to problems compounded over many years."
