| Abstract | By bringing together many substantive yet disparate views on revolution, this book attempts to treat this rather emotional subject in a serious and objective manner. It attempts to bring history to bear on the modern radical scene by presenting the ideas of Marx, Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin, Mao Tse-tung, and others, along with those of modern students. The book proceeds from an examination of the basis of revolution, to the theory and practice of revolution, and finally to an analysis of the type of society that would exist after such a restructuring. Some of the questions it poses are: On what grounds is revolution necessary or desirable? Is there a theory of revolution that is viable in the modern world? Do contemporary upheavals on campus have anything to do with revolution. Each of the six chapters presents a series of essays on that topic. In Chapter 5, the Revolution on Campus, Professor George Adams points up that the university exists not to free the human mind and spirit, but to train technicians and bureaucrats who will maintain the present socioeconomic structure; Carl Davidson presents theoretical and tactical considerations for student revolutionaries; Mario Savio articulates the students' awareness of the function of the university and their decision to alter it; and, Mark Rudd points out that the students want a total restructuring of American society.
