Abstract | This book, the second in an annual series, contains 38 articles published during the past year in the field of child psychiatry and child development. The editors attempted to compile articles "of most value to workers in this field both for immediate information and for long-term reference." Accordingly, the articles are of two types: (1) original work that should aid progress in the study of the child, and (2) reviews and discussions of present knowledge and issues. Articles of both types fall under one of the nine major areas of interest covered by the book: infancy studies, the learning process, language studies, the impact of social pathology, mental retardation, childhood psychosis, clinical psychiatry, problems of adolescence, and treatment. The issues examined are contemporary and immediate, as in the new section on the impact of social pathology, which reflects ever-growing concern with the psychological problems of the child who lives in an environment of racism and poverty.
