Abstract | This collection of essays explores multiple conceptions which constitute and possibly undermine what can count as African philosophy of higher education. Three of the most salient questions which the authors endeavour to respond to include the following: Can/should education be Africanised? Can universal and particular conceptions of education co-exist? Does ubuntu and communalism have anything to offer educational transformation? Several authors in the book make a strong case for ubuntu and communalism in order to foster what they perceive to be an African philosophy of education. Others disagree and argue that there are major deficiencies in the concepts ubuntu and communalism claiming that an individualistic approach to education would be better serve the purpose of education. This book will serve as a useful resource for those who wish to engage critically with debates about African(a) education and its implications for education policy and curriculum change in (South) Africa.
