AbstractThe book is organized into four chapters. The first chapter is an overview of the Web. It briefly explains what the Web is and how it originated. We move on to a discussion on what makes the Web an effective tool to help enhance Student learning and why teachers implement Web-based projects into the curriculum to help enhance student learning. The chapter concludes with descriptions of seven cutting-edge Web-based tools we believe every teacher should know. Although the text does not specifically focus on these tools, we believe teachers should be informed enough about the tools so they can understand what the tools are designed to accomplish. The goal of Chapter 1 is to introduce the tools and provide you with resources you can explore if you are interested in knowing more about those tools. Chapter 1 contains a number of highlighted Curriculum Integration Ideas as well as Curriculum Resources intended to help you incorporate the Web into your instructional planning. Chapter 2 is the heart of the book. This chapter focuses on the Integration of Web-based projects into the curriculum. We provide numerous examples of how teachers at various grade levels and content areas have integrated Web-based projects into their curriculum. We strived to include a variety of examples. Our hope is that by seeing these examples (and trying a few out in your classroom) you will be inspired to search for other Web-based projects and to create your own! Included in the chapter is the concept of assessment and how it fits with using the Web in the curriculum. Chapter 2 also contains a number of Curriculum Resources intended to help you implement, manage, and evaluate Web-based activities. For those wanting to create their own Web-based learning activities and projects (we hope that after reading Chapter 2 this will be you!), Chapter 3 provides you with the tools to accomplish this. This chapter provides a process for successfully designing and developing Web sites. The chapter gives an introduction to HTML-the language of the Web-:and how basic Web sites are physically created. Introductions to both basic coding and using HTML editors to create Web sites are provided. The chapter concludes with a discussion on elements that make for attractive and easy-to-read Web sites. Chapter 4 is an overview of various challenges and considerations that teachers should understand and keep in mind as they integrate the Web in the classroom. Topics such as Copyright, fair use, netiquette, and student safety are discussed. We believe this chapter will help teachers avoid common pitfalls that are associated with integrating the Web in the classroom. (DIPF/Orig.).
