Abstract | The purpose of our study is to analyze students' reading and writing difficulties in order to explain failure at university. Our sample is made up of 169 psychology freshmen. They are divided into two groups according to their university results. A questionnaire enables us to understand students' reading and writing practices. Their performance is evaluated by a reading-test. The results confirm that we can speak about illiteracy at university: students who frail don't like reading and don't think it is necessary to read. Furthermore, comparatively to students who succeed, students who fail are less competent. These results lead to reflections on teaching methods and orientation procedures in higher education.
