Abstract	In many European countries (Western and Eastern), schools are becoming increasingly autonomous, reflecting the effort to disassociate the state from the educational system. The trend is influencing the quality of education. In this article the author addresses the impact of this trend on administrative and organizational roles. He also discusses the focus of procedures with respect to educational quality and the basic nature of the efforts to reduce the state's involvement in education. The government will figure less prominently in formulating standards. Other players have entered the scene, and the government's relationship with the school system is changing as a result of the increased autonomy of schools. The author discusses these developments in the following chapters: 1. Differentiation in management in European countries; 2. Decentralization and deregulation; 3. Increasing autonomy and reforms in Central and Eastern Europe; 4. General trends in increased autonomy; 5. Consequences for directors of educational institutions; 6. The role of school leaders.
