| Abstract | This document highlights the exciting and creative learning opportunities offered in 16 British Columbia secondary schools. Schools and activities are: Johnston Heights Secondary School (Surrey)--parent-led staff development and multicultural activities to improve intercultural understanding; Centennial Secondary (Coquitlam)--salmon, ecology, and conservation lessons in the school's fish hatchery; Burnaby North Secondary School--largest advanced placement program in Canada and highest level of AP achievement; Quesnel Secondary School--senior course in high-tech woodworking skills; Mackenzie Secondary--practical outdoor courses in forestry management and shop courses in jewelry design and dragster construction; Cowichan Secondary (Duncan)--job training for students with severe disabilities and outstanding fine arts and automotive mechanics classes; Valemount Secondary--training in hospitality and adventure tourism in local ski resorts; Britannia Secondary School (Vancouver)--retention and achievement gains through culturally relevant outreach programs for Native teens and alternative programs for potential dropouts; Princess Margaret Secondary School (Surrey)--successful inner-city anti-violence program and extensive student support services; John Oliver Secondary School (Vancouver)--nationally honored history teacher and innovative courses in genetics and computer animation; Dover Bay Secondary School (Nanaimo)--awards for a student-built electric car and sports teams; Wellington Secondary School--national and international recognition for its music programs; Stelly's Secondary School (Saanich)--outdoor education and wilderness travel courses; Queen Charlotte Secondary School (Skidegate Reserve)--emphasis on Haida culture and language; Elgin Park Secondary School (Surrey)--innovative visual arts and culinary arts programs; and rural Lake Cowichan Secondary School (Vancouver Island)--exchanges of students, teachers, and cultures with a Japanese school.
