Abstract | Research since 1990 on vocational education and training (VET) and small business was reviewed. Special attention was paid to the research that has been conducted in the following categories identified in the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) Small Business Policy Framework: context; role of government; approach to training; research into delivery models suitable for small business; information and networks; credibility and quality of training; and equity. Selected findings of the review are as follows: (1) since ANTA's establishment in 1992, the government has adopted the role of promoting training and is pushing the training system to make itself more relevant to small business; (2) because the existing research on workplace-based training is inconclusive, more research is needed on the workplace as a learning environment, ways people learn, and evaluation of approaches to learning that are currently being used in small business; (3) although much of the research on information and networks refers to the need to promote a training culture, the questions of which bodies are responsible for this promotion and how it is to be accomplished are never answered clearly; and (4) few studies have been published on training providers' credibility in the eyes of small business operators/owners.
