AbstractMost teenagers do not really like to be told what to do. For that matter, most adults don't either. This article discusses contemporary artist Oliver Herring's TASK, which is an opportunity for participants to bend or define the rules on their own terms. It is about choice, and, for many, it is a dream come true. TASK is controlled chaos that can be described as a public performance that builds community. TASK is an improvisational event with a simple structure and very few rules. Students often find liberation in taking control of their activities in the classroom, and experience a true sense of belonging by interacting and interpreting their classmates' ideas in their own way. TASK is an opportunity to communicate to anybody that it is possible to make something meaningful or beautiful from the mundane. (Contains 2 online resources.) (ERIC).
