Abstract | This chapter explores how Mexican immigrants in a small central Texas town understand their roles and/or responsibilities as citizens in a democratic society regardless of their immigration status in the country. The author interviewed two men and four women about what they thought it meant to be civically engaged, and what--if any--they thought was their responsibility as: (1) U.S. permanent residents (two of the six); (2) soon to be naturalized U.S. citizens (three of the six); or (3) newly naturalized U.S. citizens (one of the six). This chapter summarizes what these six central Texas residents understood their role as citizens or permanent residents in the United States to be, and what it meant to be civically engaged regardless of their immigration status. This study can provide adult education practitioners who teach civics, citizenship, and English literacy classes with a reflexive lens by which to view their role as educators and their contributions to the history of adult civic education for immigrants.
