Abstract | In 2003, the Arts Education Partnership's Second National Forum on Partnerships Improving Teaching in the Arts recommends that Teaching Artists be trained to be advocates and to speak publicly to education stakeholders about what they do. The author agrees. However, she believes that Teaching Artists must familiarize themselves with the available research and evidence regarding the significance of arts education to effectively speak and advocate on the field's behalf. Knowledge is power, especially in times of scarce resources and emphases on standardized testing. Thus, the author argues that Teaching Artists must develop their own armament of knowledge and information to share with colleagues, parents, administrators and politicians. She contends that they must arm themselves with knowledge about dance that comes not only from the field of dance but from the arts, humanities, social, behavioral and cognitive sciences. (ERIC). |
