Abstract | The purpose of this study was to compare the demographic characteristics of undergraduate smokers and non-smokers at a mid-sized, Mid-Atlantic university using an online survey. Five hundred ten students (77.7% response rate) participated. Data analysis revealed major, year, and athlete status were related to smoking, while gender and age were not. Twenty-three percent of participants reported being smokers, compared to 2.7% of athletes. Participants enrolled in health-related majors were half as likely to smoke (11.8%) than their counterparts. Implications include tailoring smoking education, prevention and intervention efforts for students with characteristics related to higher smoking rates. (Contains 4 tables.) (As Provided). |
