Abstract | Memento. Memoir. Memorable. Memory. Memorial. Commemorate. In Memoriam. These words may remind a person of stone monuments, or larger-than-life heroes and loved ones far distanced by space and time. The act of remembering, though, also belongs in the world of the everyday and the ordinary, and has a valuable place in an art classroom. In this article, the author describes how students created little objects which function as visual memoirs using bathroom tissue rolls. These objects give students the opportunity to honor something that has passed--whether a person, pet, or dream, feeling, or event that has become part of their own personal narrative. The combination of an intimate viewing experience, use of everyday materials, and play of light and shadow makes these surprisingly compelling mementos. (Contains 1 online resource.) (ERIC). |
