Abstract | In this article, the author discusses the important roles that students, school staff and teachers play in keeping the school safe particularly from weapons. The author believes that one way that they do this is by working together to reduce the problem of weapons in school. The role of school staff and teachers extends beyond prevention and detection. Teachers intervene in crises involving weapons and school psychologists are commonly consulted in cases involving weapons. School adults require training to confidently and effectively respond to crises involving weapons. While safety technologies, such as metal detectors, can be useful tools in reducing risk, attention must be paid to the extent to which they disrupt existing positive and constructive relationships between and among students, teachers and other school adults. The author concludes that an engaged and involved school communities can make schools safer. (ERIC). |
