AbstractPlasticine clay is a bendable material that is easily manipulated by students of all ages. It is a great material to work with because it does not dry out from day to day, so high-school students can work on an extended project. They do not have to worry about the clay drying and cracking, and the entire work of art does not have to be completed in just a couple of days. The difference between plasticine/polymer clay and others is the compound is not really clay, but fine particles of polyvinyl chloride suspended in plasticizer. Most clay is made of particles of silicate immersed in water, which is why it dries out so easily. Rather than having her students make a freestanding project with this clay, the author had her students study famous works of art and paint with clay, mostly using their fingers. The learning objectives of the lesson are for students to develop an appreciation for the malleable medium, demonstrate an ability to blend colors with clay, and become adept at using tools for textural effect, as well as increase their knowledge as they interpret Masterworks in clay, exploring the relationship of color and design while painting with plasticine.
