AbstractIntimate or romantic relationships for young people today play an integral role in their health and quality of life. Between the ages of 11 and 13 students become more interested in the opposite sex and as a result they begin to develop more intimate relationships. Around this age students are learning to deal with these feelings of attraction and sexual urges. It can be difficult to separate the strong emotional connection two people have within a romantic relationship and their sexual desire. Sexual activity when introduced into a relationship, especially early on, can complicate matters on a relational, mental, and emotional level if the relationship does not have a strong foundation rooted in healthy qualities. However, if students learn how to build healthy and strong connections with their partner before engaging in sexual activity, they will be able to develop lasting intimate bonds. This article presents an activity that allows the students to: (1) Identify and describe the qualities of a healthy relationship after analyzing a particular song's lyrics; (2) Describe how sexual activity, when introduced early on, can affect a romantic or intimate relationship; and (3) Explore the influence their own personal values and beliefs have within an intimate relationship.
