AbstractThe future challenge and opportunity for institutional researchers is to serve as change agents with involvement in initiating, implementing, and evaluating campus work. Institutional researchers are poised to excel at doing so because of the array of technical skills they routinely apply to existing institutional research roles. Their work introduces them broadly to campus systems and divisional cultures and requires them to develop critical thinking and reasoning skills that are highly transferable to an array of settings and situations. Terenzini (1999) highlighted these skills in his description of institutional research work as technical and analytical intelligence, issues intelligence, and contextual intelligence. This chapter offers suggestions for how institutional researchers can become change agents and issues calls to action from institutional research professional associations, graduate programs, and managers and practitioners.
