Abstract | In this essay, the author recalls several of her experiences in which she successfully pulled her boats out of river holes by throwing herself to the water as a sea-anchor. She learned this trick from her senior guides at a spring training. Her guides told her, "When you're stuck in a hole, take the "C" train."" "Meaning?" The author asked her trainers. "The current! Get something--anything--into that downstream current. It'll pull you out." The author also recalls the lessons she learned from her jazz ensemble teacher at the University of Utah. Her teacher would emphasize the importance of practice. The author took in his words, her face would burn at how poorly she played the guitar in her lap. Determined to do as he said, she still floundered each time her turn came to solo. His words reminded the author that all the talent and teaching in the world come to nothing if not cultivated. Practice and intentional experience are key. (ERIC). |
