Abstract | Basic-needs insecurity is not a new hurdle, but one that is exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although it was only recently that more institutions began identifying basic-needs insecurity--the lack of access to, or ability to pay for, adequate food and shelter--as a significant challenge keeping students from obtaining credentials, such hurdles were present and prevalent before the pandemic forced college and university campuses to close. Addressing basic-needs insecurity is being discussed "a lot" or "a great deal" on college and university campuses, as basic-needs insecurity is a hindrance to degree completion. Some institutions have stood out in addressing short-term basic-needs insecurity challenges, but long-term solutions are necessary. It will take well-funded and well-delivered programs, social work training for staff, and community partnerships to support student retention. (ERIC). |
