AbstractThe Future Voices in Public Services column is a forum for students in graduate library and information science programs to discuss key issues they see in academic library public services, to envision what they feel librarians in public service have to offer to academia, to relate their visions for the profession, or to describe research that is going on in library schools. This article features a discussion of Research Data Management (RDM) from a library practitioner's perspective. The author begins with a description of a prompt book, which is a master copy of a theatrical script. It lays out all the dialogues as well as other relevant details necessary to create a successful theatrical production. Author Siu Hong Yu describes how a presentation by post-doctoral fellow Toby Malone (2015) at the Research Data Management Conference organized by the University of Waterloo Library using prompt-book materials from a theatrical presentation expanded his vision and definition of research data management (RDM), and what (RDM) could entail in the arts and humanities. The following questions are explored as a result with the author's experience: (1) What exactly is Research Data Management (RDM); (2) What kinds of RDM services do researchers need; (3) How can academic libraries best support RDM; and (4) Why should they be bothered. The author admits that as a student he does not have all the answers so he spoke to three librarians and one data technician from three Canadian universities in the hope of acquiring an expanded practitioner's perspective on RDM in writing this article.
