| Abstract | In May 2016, the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Education issued guidance to schools intended to provide transgender students with safe and inclusive learning environments. On the heels of this guidance, Ellen Kahn, the Human Rights Campaign's director of Children, Youth, and Families Program, offers advice for educators seeking to provide transgender students with a welcoming school culture. She describes key terms to be familiar with, urges educators to challenge their assumptions about gender, addresses ways to create a safe space, and suggests that educators take a collective approach to changing a school's climate for transgender students.
