Abstract | This article presents one approach to providing geography education training to pre-service teachers--a two-day, professional development conference dedicated to preservice teachers and provided to them at no cost. The authors begin by explaining more fully the need for reaching pre-service teachers with good training in geography education. A description of the development and implementation process of the Mississippi Geographic Alliance (MGA) Pre-service Geography Conference is provided before presenting an outline of the conference that has been conducted nineteen times since its inauguration in 1997. The article continues with a summary of the formative assessment process employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the conference along with the ongoing change and improvement in the conference that has resulted. Finally, the article ends with consideration of plans for the future of this conference and a brief review of other efforts presently underway nationwide to improve the training that pre-service teachers receive in geography education.
