Abstract | The current study aimed to understand the principal's role in promoting or inhibiting the appearance of teacher organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB) in safety education. Based on semistructured interviews with 30 teachers and 10 principals working in the Israeli State Education System, it was found that the principal influences teacher OCB in safety education (and probably in other aspects of the schooling process) through caring for the teachers' needs, devising a school policy that prioritizes road safety education, delegating authority to self-starter teachers, providing support to teachers' initiatives and OCBs, and expressing positive emotions including positive feedback to the teachers who go beyond formal role expectations at work.
