AbstractThis study was conducted to explore K-5 general education teachers' understanding of behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs regarding the behaviors of students with DB. K-5 teachers completed questionnaires and individual interviews were conducted to understand the descriptions of DB that K-5 teachers provide regarding the effects of DB in their classrooms and explore the behavior management strategies teachers implemented in their classrooms regarding their understanding of DB. The findings reported from this study highly suggested that all K-5 general education teachers must have an in-depth understanding of DB to manage these behaviors effectively. Medical and educational disabilities, unstructured, teacher centered classrooms and other themes that emerged are stated causes of DB in the classroom. K-5 general education teachers noted indicated that decreased learning opportunities, safety concerns, and strain relationships are effects of students displaying DB in the classroom. In addition, K-5 general education teachers stated that, building relationships, frequent positive reinforcements, and teaching structures and routines are valuable behavior management strategies.
