Abstract | Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred are wrong, and should not be tolerated at universities, or anywhere in society. Islamophobia refers to hostility, mistrust or hatred towards Islam and Muslim people, because of their Muslim identity (or perceived Muslim identity). Evidence suggests that Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred are widespread, and perhaps even normalised, in the United Kingdom (UK). The purpose of this briefing is to raise awareness of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred in higher education, and suggest practical actions that universities can take in response. Universities now have an opportunity to strengthen their understanding of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred, and double down on efforts to address it. This briefing supports this by: (1) defining Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred in the UK; (2) highlighting the issues faced by Muslim students and where universities can act; (3) offering case studies to illustrate the approaches taken by universities; and (4) providing links to further information, training and resources.
